SAT Fjärdlång step by step

Here you will find a complete step by step description. This is a hiking guide, not a descriptive narrative.

  • Moderate: 11.7 km
  • 3.5 hours walking time
  • 79 meters of elevation gain
  • Outhouse available by the harbor (Only during the summer)
  • Water available by the harbor (Only during the summer)

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail section on Fjärdlång is only accessible by the public ferry during the summer season, or if you arrive with a private or chartered boat.

From the ferry quay to the Tractor Road

2.1 km

From the ferry quay, follow the gravel road past the football field. After 500 meters, you will reach a trail going off to the right (south). It is SAT-marked.

Follow this technical trail along the coast through rolling terrain—first south, then east, and finally a bit north—until you reach a large ditch.

Cross the ditch and follow the markings a few dozen meters southward to a small tractor road.

Here, you can choose to go right (east) for an out-and-back detour to the coast. This section is included because of the beautiful swimming cliffs north of the garbage dock (where the tractor road ends).

Tractor Road to Trail Junction

0.9 km

We choose to go left, north on the tractor road. This is the direction to continue on the Stockholm Archipelago Trail.

The tractor road takes you 500 meters to a junction at the northwest corner of a field.

Turn right (northeast) toward the houses on a new, smaller road.

Walk 150 meters between the houses to an open slight slope. You will see a barn to your right. Walk diagonally uphill across the open slope (northward) onto a smaller forest road, which leads you 250 meters to a four-way trail junction.

Left leads to the hostel (about 100 meters).

To continue on the SAT, go right and uphill (northeast).

Junction to Meadow by the Bay

3 km

Continue gently uphill along a technical trail. This trail winds through forest and open ridges with occasional sea views, covering 3 km to a meadow at the southern end of a large bay.

Meadow by the Bay to the ferry quay

3.5 km

At the meadow, cross the fence stile. On the other side, you can walk directly south through the meadow to a small forest section that leads to the northern end of the football field mentioned earlier. It is a 1.5 km easy walk back to the ferry quay if you choose this way.

The route below is a bit more technical.

Instead, go 50 meters south then cross the meadow, towards the west, to the other side, . Follow the trail north, cross another fence stile, and continue along the west side of the bay.

After 300 meters, you’ll reach a new trail junction. From here, SAT continues south through the forest—but first, you can do a short out-and-back to the highest point on the island for the view.

We go north to enjoy the view and then return to this spot.

The trail continues over a bridge and along the coast for about 100 meters before turning into the forest. It winds uphill for 300 meters and then joins another trail to the right, going uphill—100 meters to the top of “Tysta Klint.”

Enjoy the view.

Then the trail descends into the forest, turning left (south) for 600 meters to the trail junction where we previously detoured.

From this junction, it’s 900 meters south and then east through rolling terrain to a large meadow—the same one where you previously crossed the fence stile.

Continue south along the eastern edge of the meadow toward the forest.

Walk 500 meters to the northern end of the football field. Then walk 200 meters along the eastern edge of the open area where the football field is, until you reach the gravel road.

This is the same gravel road you came on at the beginning.

Here, turn right (southwest) and walk 300 meters to return to the steamboat pier.
