The Svartsö section of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail can be seen as two loops connected by a gravel road used for connecting the two.
Svartsö has several ferry quays served by Waxholmsbolaget boats. Therefore, you can hike sections of the trail as linear hikes or out-and-back to form a loop.
We recommend hiking the section counterclockwise.
The trail is easy to follow as it mainly follows gravel roads, but it also includes two locally marked trail sections that connect the roads.
Svartsö Norra to Alsvik
3.6 km
From the pier, the trail heads south along the gravel road. After a few hundred meters, at the top of the hill, you will find Svartsö Skärgårdshotell.
The trail continues on the gravel road to a three-way intersection, about 500 meters from the ferry quay.
At the intersection, turn right (west). Follow the smaller gravel road along the lake (the island’s drinking water source) for about 700 meters until it becomes a wider forest trail.
Follow this trail for 400 meters to the corner of a field. Here, the SAT trail makes a sharp left turn (more than 90 degrees) onto a smaller path, marked with wooden signs painted with bluebells.
Follow the Bluebell Trail south for 1,600 meters to a three-way intersection of gravel roads.
Here, SAT turns left (east) on the gravel road.
Continue for 400 meters to Alsvik and the guest harbor. You will also find the general store here, which is open most of the year.
In Alsvik, you can also take a Waxholmsbolaget boat onward.
Alsvik to the Four-Way Intersection
3.5 km
From Alsvik, continue east on the gravel road.
After 250 meters, you pass Svartsö Krog.
Stop here or continue.
SAT continues on the gravel road for another 300 meters to a turnoff going uphill to the right (east), turning 90 degrees off the main road.
Take the turnoff for about 100 meters until SAT turns left, heading north on a forest trail. It climbs slightly, then descends into a pasture.
Here, SAT continues north along the left (western) edge of the pasture to a gate and re-joins the gravel road.
Turn right (east) on the gravel road.
After 1,200 meters, you will reach a new three-way intersection. A sign points right (south) toward Skälvik, where there is a ferry quay—about 700 meters away via the gravel road.
If you are not heading to the pier, continue straight (east) on the SAT trail via the gravel road.
Skälvik ferry quay
If you disembark at Skälvik ferry quay, follow the gravel road north for 700 meters until it intersects with the main east–west gravel road.
SAT continues to the right (east).
Alsvik and Svartsö Krog are to the left (west), about 2 km.
We continue east on the main gravel road
50 meters after the Skälvik intersection, SAT turns off the road slightly right, by a large boulder, onto a broader forest trail.
Follow this for about 200 meters to a new gravel road that runs north–south.
If you head south (right), you will first reach Svartsö School. Just after is the road heading east to Bistro Sågen, 500 meters from the intersection. It’s well worth a visit.
After visiting Sågen, return here and continue north on the gravel road for 100 meters to a large four-way intersection.
This is the heart of the island.
Going north leads to Svartsö Skärgårdshotell and Svartsö Norra ferry quay(1.2 km).
Going west takes you back to Alsvik, Svartsö Krog, and Skälvik before that.
Going east means you will need to either return here later or take a Waxholmsbolaget boat from Söderboudd.
The Four-Way Intersection to Söderboudd ferry quay
3.3 km along the gravel road without turning.
The Four-Way Intersection to the anemone trail and back to the Four-Way Intersection (this location)
6.2 km
We follow this last option.
Walk 2.8 km along the gravel road to a three-way intersection. Go straight if heading to Söderboudd ferry quay.
We turn north at the intersection and walk 300 meters until reaching a 90-degree bend to the left (west). There is a bay on the right and a field on the left.
Follow the road left (west) along the northern edge of the field.
After 500 meters and a steep downhill section, SAT joins a trail (not SAT-marked due to landowner restrictions). This path is marked with wood signs depicting anemones (Vitsippor).
The trail turns more than 90 degrees to the left, heading south from the gravel road.
Follow this path 800 meters to a ditch. There, SAT markings resume.
Follow the path 300 meters south to a gravel road—this is the same large east–west gravel road used earlier in the day.
Go right (west): 1.6 km to the four-way intersection.
Go left (east): 1.7 km to Söderboudd ferry quay.
We head west to the four-way intersection.
The Four-Way Intersection
North: 1.2 km to Svartsö Skärgårdshotell and Svartsö Norra ferry quay.
South: 600 meters to Restaurant Sågen.
West: 2.2 km to Svartsö Krog and then Alsvik ferry quay, with turnoff to Skälvik ferry quay before that.
