Nämdö step by step

Here you will find a complete section description. This is a hiking guide, not a painted picture.

  • Moderate 13.1 km
  • 4:30 hours walking time
  • 40 meters of elevation gain
  • Public toilet available at the museum in Sand (not available in winter)
  • Water available at the museum in Sand (not available in winter)

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail section on Nämdö features several ferry quays where you can catch the Waxholms boat. You can choose where to start and where to finish.

We describe the section starting from Nämdöböte, the northernmost point of the trail.

Nämdöböte to Östanvik Farm

1.6 km

Nämdöböte is the northernmost ferry quay on this section. Before starting the trail, we recommend walking up to the lookout tower on the hill above the pier (to the east).

You will see a faintly marked trail leading diagonally upward to the right along the hill. It is not SAT-marked.

Once back down, start walking.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail follows a wide path along the field heading south for 250 meters. Then it turns right, across the open area, to the tractor road in the southwestern corner.

Follow the tractor road for 1100 meters to Östanvik Farm.

At the three-way junction by Östanvik Farm, you can turn left towards the farm to continue on the gravel road about 600 meters to the steamboat jetty or to the farm shop, which is open during summer.

We continue south on the main gravel road, following SAT.

Östanvik Farm to Solvik

3 km

After 900 meters along the gravel road, you will reach the point where SAT rejoins the road after looping around the island. A trail connects from the west.

About 100 meters further south, you will find a red shed with a sign pointing left (east) to Kyrknäset. Take a 150-meter detour to enjoy this beautiful spot by the sea.

Back on the gravel road, continue south.

It is a scenic walk. After 700 meters, you will reach a spot called “Skvallertorget.” 100 meters after that, a sign on the left (east) says VÄSTANVIK — a place where you can also catch the Waxholms boat if you like.

We continue south on the gravel road to a large three-way intersection. Here, turn left (east) toward Solvik.

If you continue on the gravel road to the left of the church, you will arrive in Solvik, where you will find a summer shop, restaurant, seasonal toilet, summer water, and a steamboat jetty.

Solvik to Sand

0.5 km

From the church in Solvik, a wide path leads south of the church (right) for 200 meters to the ferry quay in Sand, where you can also catch the Waxholms boat.

SAT continues slightly uphill on a gravel road into the village of Sand. After 250 meters, on the south side of the road, you will reach the small archipelago museum and the heritage museum.

SAT continues to the large gravel road.

Sand to the turnoff toward Västerby

1 km

Walk south on the gravel road until you reach a turnoff heading west (right). From here, the trail is unmarked for about 1.7 km.

Make sure you know where you are and where to go. Use the interactive map. Respect private property and pass quickly near any homes.

Turnoff toward Västerby to trail toward the lake at Tjusvik

3.3 km

Follow the smaller gravel road for 700 meters until it bends 90 degrees by a house.

Here, go straight onto the trail to the left (west) of the house. Since we pass close to the house, please move quietly and respectfully. Once in the forest, enjoy the beautiful woodland trail.

From the house, walk 1000 meters to the next waypoint. Here, SAT turns right (north) off the larger forest path onto a small trail.

SAT markings reappear here. Follow them for 300 meters until you reach a small gravel road.

Turn left (west) and follow the markings for 600 meters until you reach a smaller forest road heading right (north).

Follow that for 600 meters until a trail turns right again (east). It is marked in white, running parallel to the SAT markings.

Trail toward the lake to the southern end of Långvik

1.1 km

Enter the SAT-marked trail. Follow the SAT markings 200 meters to the lake. (If you follow the white markings, you will miss the lake.)

From the lake, follow the SAT markings (now parallel to the white ones) 400 meters to a pasture. You will need to cross an electric fence — be sure to close it behind you. There are cows in the field; please respect them.

Note: you are in a nature reserve, and dogs must be kept on a leash.

Once in the open pasture, follow the white markings 200 meters north to the southern end of Långvik.

Southern Långvik to gravel road south of Östanvik Farm

1 km

After the grove at the south end of the bay, the SAT and white markings diverge.

The white trail goes north along the water for 1.8 km to the field 400 meters south of the Nämdöböte ferry quay. It also passes a public sauna.

SAT continues straight ahead, slightly uphill to the east for 70 meters to a gate.

Pass through the gate and make sure it’s closed behind you.

Follow the rolling, wide forest trail for 900 meters to the large north-south gravel road.

Gravel road junction

From the junction it is:

  • 1.5 km north to the ferry quay at Östanvik Farm
  • 2.5 km north to the ferry quay at Nämdöböte
  • 2 km south to services and the ferry quay in Solvik
