Landsort

Here you will find a complete description. This is a hiking guide, not a narrative text.

  • Moderate – 13,8 km
  • 3:45 hours walking time
  • 55 meters of elevation gain
  • Public toilet available in the Northern harbour
  • Water available in the same place

The Landsort section can be seen either as one full section or three shorter ones, depending on where you come ashore and how you choose to plan your hike.

The description below is divided into three sections, which you can combine however you like.

“Landsort” is the name of the village on the island of Öja, but in everyday language it’s also used to refer to the whole island. The section “Landsort” follows parts of an existing trail called “Öjaleden,” which is marked in blue and runs parallel to the SAT trail markings. This trail has been extended to follow the SAT route around the northern part of the island.

The entire island is a nature reserve, which means dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Please read the nature reserve regulations on the information boards.

The Waxholm boat usually docks at either the Northern or Eastern quay, depending on weather conditions. From the Northern quay, you can either start hiking directly or take the shuttle bus (which connects with the boat) to the village of Landsort.

The three sections:

• Northern Loop

• Middle Loop

• Southern Loop

Northern Loop

2,2 km

The Northern Loop starts at the Northern pier. From there, it’s about 200 meters south to the intersection by the “camping area.”

There, turn north, passing the camping and grill area, and enter the pasture. Remember to close the gate behind you. Follow the trail markers up toward the high point at the old bunker, heading northeast – about 400 meters.

At the old bunker, you can take a short detour to visit the “giant’s cauldron” (100 meters away) where stone and water have carved a perfectly round hole into the rock since the Ice Age.

Then continue downhill along the rocky cliffs. Be cautious when it’s wet – it can get very slippery. After about 200 meters, you will reach a small valley with glacial moraine rocks (also from the Ice Age), which you cross, continuing along the cliffside trail on your left. After 150 meters, you will reach the northern coastline. Here, you will see old stone walls, remnants of days gone by. Follow the trail along the coast until it turns south (left) and climbs gently up to the rock beacon. The view here is spectacular in all directions.

The trail then heads southeast along the ridge. It is a bit tricky to find among the rocks, but clear enough once you are oriented. After about 200 meters, the trail turns south again, descending through a rocky crevice into a meadow. Follow the trail for about 500 meters until you are back at the gate just north of the tent area.

Go through the gate and close it behind you. At the intersection in front of you, you are back where you started.

From here, you can:

• Walk the gravel road down to the village of Landsort – about 3 km

• Walk the “Middle Loop” in reverse through the forest to Landsort – about 3,4 km

• Or take the Waxholm boat to Ankarudden if it is departing from the Northern quay

Middle Loop

7 km

The Middle Loop starts at the Eastern quay in Landsort village.

If you need to drop off bags at the ”Lotstornet” or the hostel, go up the stairs from the harbor. First, you will reach the ”Lotstornet”, then Svedtiljas restaurant, and below it to the left along the gravel road, you will find the hostel after 300 meters.

Let’s do the Middle Loop.

From the quay, follow the road from the harbor for 100 meters until you reach the 4-way intersection, which is also the village center. Here you will see the Western harbor, and there is a restaurant and shop.

At the intersection, you will also find the sign showing where the Waxholm boat departs from.

We head north (right) on the gravel road through the village to a 3-way intersection – about 300 meters.

Continue 30 meters past the intersection and you will see a SAT arrow to the right and a sign for Öjaleden. Turn onto that trail. Cross the soccer field to its northern end and find the trail going north along the cliffs.

Soccer field to ERSTA- Battery

1100 meters

From the soccer field, follow the trail marked with blue dots and SAT ribbons. It goes over rocky outcrops and through forested sections until you reach ERSTA Battery.

Here you can read up on some local history. From ERSTA Battery, if you want to shorten the loop, you can take the forest road west to the gravel road and return to Landsort village – about 1500 meters back.

We continue north along the trail.

ERSTA Battery to the Camping Area by the Northern Harbor

2,2 km

The trail continues through similar terrain heading north until you reach a small valley that leads northwest, passing old house foundations and ending at the camping area.

From here, you can choose to:

• Do the Northern Loop – about 2,2 km

• Or head south along the gravel road back to Landsort village – about 3 km

Camping Area to Landsort Village

3 km

Follow the gravel road all the way back.

Southern Loop

2 km

The Southern Loop also starts at the Eastern harbor. From there, walk about 100 meters to the central 4-way intersection. Head south on the gravel road (left).

After 150 meters, you will come to a Y-intersection with the sea to the west (right). If you want to visit Svedtiljas or the hostel, go left.

We’re going right – toward the lighthouse. After 350 meters, go up the stairs to the lighthouse.

When you are ready to continue, pass the lighthouse and go down eastward (left) to the gravel road – 50 meters.

On the gravel road, head east (left). BUT before doing that, you can turn right and walk to the southern tip of the island. It’s worth it – there you will find the southernmost bench on the entire SAT trail. Then return.

Continue east (left) on the gravel road. After 100 meters, you will reach the hostel. From there, follow the gravel road 300 meters north again until you reach the stairs at Svedtiljas. Go up the stairs. Fingers crossed it’s open – it’s worth a stop.

Then continue past the ”Lotstornet” (Pilot house, now a hotel) and down the stairs, and you will be back at the Eastern harbor.
