Stockholm Archipelago Trail During Peak Season

July and August are peak season in the Stockholm archipelago. This is the period when the most people live in and visit this magical place. For it to be a positive experience for everyone, we all need to help out.

The Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) – What does it mean?

During the months of July and August, the Stockholm archipelago and the Stockholm Archipelago Trail see the most amount of people. To avoid friction between visitors and landowners, it’s important to be familiar with the Right of Public Access — not just the rights, but also the responsibilities.

It’s also important to understand the difference between the Right of Public Access and the “home privacy zone” (hemfridszon) around private dwellings.

Trail Ethics

During this busy period (and always) we ask you all to practice good trail ethics so we can continue with the Stockholm Archipelago Trail.

  • Make sure you understand the Right of Public Access. As an example, it allows you to pass where there is a trail, but it does not allow you to sit on someone’s porch or enter someone’s garden.
  • If you’re camping or having a picnic, do so out of sight and earshot of residential buildings.
  • Do not disturb people, flora, and fauna.
  • Be respectful of each other.
  • Take all garbage with you and dispose of it on the mainland or at public collection points.
  • Use public toilets (the ferry is a great place to start), or in the worst case, bury your natural waste and make sure to bring the paper with you.
  • Close all gates to pastures, even if they were open.
  • Do not light fires anywhere other than designated fire pits. Respect fire bans.
  • Leave no trace and take nothing but memories.

SAT Travel planner


To make logistics along the trail easier, we’ve spent the past few weeks testing a new travel planner. We’re pleased to say we’re very happy with the results. You can plan multi-day trips, find food, water, toilets, accommodation, and other facilities based on open source data. It also lets you track your own position along the trail in offline mode, and it helps conserve your phone’s battery by going into “sleep mode” while in use.

North South Ferry line until August 16

The North-South Ferry line (Nordsydlinjen) starts in Nynäshamn and Norrtälje. The daily boats meet in Sandhamn before returning to their starting points. This gives you the opportunity to reach most sections of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail without having to return to the mainland.
